Japanese Pharmacological Society Joint Meeting

March 17 - March 19

The Japan Anatomy Society, the Japan Physiological Society, and the Japan Pharmacological Society are Japan’s leading long-standing academic organizations in the field of basic medicine, and each has a long history of activities. In the past, there have been joint conferences on anatomy and physiology (2011, 2015, 2021) and physiology and pharmacology (2003), but this is the first time that the three academic societies have held a joint conference. It all started when Yoshihiro Ishikawa, then president of the Physiological Society of Japan (Yokohama City University), proposed the possibility of holding a joint conference of many basic medical societies in Japan, such as FASEB in the United States, and in 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic spread nationwide, he called on Hiroyuki Yaginuma, president of the Anatomical Society of Japan (Fukushima Medical University) and Kazuhiko Taniuchi, president of the Japanese Society of Pharmacology, to call on him. The following year, Watanabe, Naruse, and Akabane, who were appointed or planned to be the next presidents, also participated in an online meeting, and it was decided to hold a joint convention in 2025. One of the things we agreed upon at that time was that the executive teams of each academic society would be involved in the joint meeting. The aim was not to end this joint event as a single firework, but to continue to improve and develop research and education capabilities in the field of basic medicine, and to make it a lively place for the development of young human resources to support it. The number of basic academic societies that resonate with this purpose is increasing.
The theme of this year’s three-society joint conference (Anatomy-Physiology-Pharmacology Week in 2025, abbreviated as APPW2025) is “Toward the Future of Concerto ~Exploring, Solving and Protecting Life~”. Through an interdisciplinary collaboration centered on the three academic societies, we will explore the mechanism of maintaining homeostasis of individuals through the cooperation of cells and organs, and the diversity and sustainability of life through the cooperation of individuals and the environment, with the aim of realizing a healthy future society. The subtitle “~Exploring, Solving and Protecting Life~” expresses the characteristics of each academic field as exploring life from the perspective of structure (anatomy), solving it from the aspect of function (physiology), and opening up ways to protect life (pharmacology). The cover and poster designs of the program book put the theory of the structure and function of the human body at the center, and express our desire to realize One Health, which integrates the protection and health of all living things and the health of the earth and space environment. In addition, the spiral patterns on the background of the human body and One Health are inspired by the Department of Anatomy at the University of Padua (Teatro Anatomico) and the medical researchers who spread their wings around the world from there.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic that broke out at the end of 2019, the way academic meetings are held has changed rapidly, including in-person meetings, online meetings, and hybrid meetings. In light of the recent social situation, and keeping a close eye on future trends, including other infectious diseases, APPW2025 is preparing to hold the event at Makuhari Messe on a face-to-face basis.
We hope that many people will come to the local venue and enjoy the economies of scale and the chemical reactions that are unique to the joint competition.
