2024 World Smart Medication Day

Theme: Drug Evaluation at the Extremes of Ages

Held on 2 May 2024

The World Smart Medication Day is led by Prof Karel Allegaert, Chair, Paediatric Committee and Prof Sarah Hilmer, Chair, Geriatric Committee of the Clinical and Translational Division of the IUPHAR.

Program:

  • Introduction: Importance of considering drug evaluation at the extremes of ages and opportunities to learn from each other
  • Perspectives from committee chairs and members on key considerations for paediatric and geriatric populations regarding:
    • Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics Considerations for the Extremes of Age
    • Clinical Trial Considerations at the Extremes of Age
    • Pharmacovigilance Considerations at the Extremes of Age
  • Reflections and Future Directions
  • Poster Competition Winner Presentations
  • Audience Questions and Answers

General Posters Entry:

The competition is open to all medical, pharmacy or pharmacology pregraduate students.

Posters can be created through any medium (digital, illustrated, hand drawn/painted) but must be submitted digitally to your national pharmacological society. Please see the contact list below.

Evaluating drugs in extreme age populations helps ensure that medications are safe, effective, and appropriately dosed for different age groups. Some examples : key messages about how drugs affect different age groups, including pediatric (children) and geriatric (elderly) populations, special consideration regarding dosage adjustments based on weight, age-appropriate formulations, age-related changes in metabolism, balancing between benefits and risks, especially in the frail elderly, increased sensitivity to adverse effects, managing the complexity of multiple medications. You can also make vignettes (drawings and/or brief medical stories) with examples, or emblematic drawings. Be creative!

Research Posters Entry:

The competition is open to all medical, pharmacy or pharmacology pre- and post-graduate students.

Criteria:

  • How relevant is the work to the theme?
  • How clearly does the abstract describe the work that was conducted?
  • Are the methods sound?
  • Are the conclusions consistent with the results?
  • What is the impact of the work in the field of clinical pharmacology?

Deadlines:

  • The deadline for submission to national societies is: 29 March 2024. If you are unsure who to submit to, please see the International Students’ Poster Competition Contact List below.
  • The deadline for national winners selection (2 best posters) by national societies is: 8 April 2024.
  • The deadline for IUPHAR to select the winners and the 10 best posters for oral presentation is: 15 April 2024.
  • 4 prizes will be awarded by IUPHAR Clinical and Translational Section (2 best general posters and 2 best research posters).
