What We Do
The Geriatric Committee aims to encourage the international development of geriatric pharmacology and to advocate for the therapeutic needs of older people. Our goal is to improve the use of drugs in older people and the development new therapeutic approaches for the syndromes and diseases of old age.
Our activities span education, research and advocacy.
- Education: webinars and seminars at relevant conferences to promote geriatric pharmacology; curricula and resources to support education in geriatric pharmacology; mentorship.
- Research: synthesize principles to guide research in geriatric pharmacology covering drug development, evaluation and use; engage with basic research applicable to translational geriatric pharmacology.
- Advocacy: engage with regulatory agencies, governmental offices and relevant organizations to improve safety, efficacy and access to pharmacological treatments for older patients.
Dr Darrell Abernethy (USA) established the Geriatric Sub-committee of the Clinical Division of the IUPHAR in 2008. With the restructuring of the IUPHAR in 2022, it became the Geriatric Committee of the Clinical and Translational Section.
